Improving Memory and Concentration
One-third
of a student’s lifetime is devoted to studies.
You would have put over 10 years of study by the time you complete your
schooling. Taking on an average of eight
hours a day means that you would have put in approximately 29,000 hours of
study.
How much of it do you remember?
Suppose
you are asked to write down what you know, you would exhaust all your knowledge
within just a few hours.
Though
we have completed the last year’s examination successfully, we rarely remember
what we studied a year ago.
What happened to what we have learned?
If
it is forgotten, did the long hours of hard work go to waste?
Even
when we are studying for the current examination, we have to study the same
material over and again.
🔔 TIP from Swach Chetan 🔔
First, we must choose 'Learning to Learn'
Why can we not remember forever what we study in one sitting?
Modern
Pedagogical techniques have shown that an awareness of the nature of
information processing will facilitate learning and help in retaining
information longer. The Study Skills Program
is aimed at providing such an awareness to the student so that studying becomes
an effortless activity. At the same time,
a minimum amount of effort should be able to bring in an optimum level of
performance in the student whenever there is a need to recall the information
that is learned.
What can we learn from a football player?
A football player can be successful not only by learning to play football but also by vigorous exercising, long-distance running, and maintenance of good health and appetite.

THE STRATEGY
Your first job is to understand and
clarify the GENERAL LAYOUT in terms
of the syllabus, the outline of the study material, as well as its structure.
The next step is to discover the RELATIONSHIP that exists between one
chapter and the other. In addition, it
is necessary to fuse such a relationship between chapters so that there is
continuity in the association of ideas.
The third requirement is to elicit the MEANING, the central idea, on which a
piece of the given information is based.
The meaning should be sustained for a
given amount of time in the WORKING MEMORY
so that proper assimilation of information is possible. This can be carried out through attention,
rehearsal, and eidetic imagery.
Understanding is far clearer and easier
when PARALLEL PROCESSING of
information takes place rather than serial processing alone.
Finally,
the material so learned should be ORGANIZED
and STORED through techniques of
chunking, tagging, and retrieval cues.
This program has given effective results to hundreds of students. A research article explaining how this program works can be accessed here.
Following
this method will help in retaining a larger amount of information and minimize
concentration difficulties. The following books provide a complete guide to
