Depression has taken epidemic proportions
How does depression affect people?
People are getting depressed for some reason or the other. Life becomes unbearable and the future looks bleak to them. A minor setback or a failure leads to suicide, and sometimes to homicide. Couple this with a pandemic like Covid-19, and we have a disaster in the making!
What causes depression?
There are indeed neurological and chemical changes that correlate with depression. However, we may have made a mistake in concluding that these are responsible for the mood of the person. They are just concomitants and not causal factors. My specific research over the last 30 years has yielded an understanding of the width and depth of the problem.
What sets our mood towards depression is the way we think, feel, and perceive things around us. We do not know how to come out of the situation we are in because we are part of the complexity. We have learned to set our behavior in a specific way that is conducive to immense suffering.
Are energetic people prone to depression?
Depression does not spare even successful people. It is always better to prevent depression than face it. Depression is too dangerous for the person and painful for others. It pains us when celebrities end their successful life. They could have contributed more to society had they been alive!
What makes them depressed and why do they take such an extreme step?
Their state of mind influences their thinking that things are coming to an end. They do not see any hope or way to get around it. They feel that people in their close circles are deliberately avoiding them. They start realizing that their future is going to be worse and this thought keeps recurring in them.
Why waste a life that still has to realize its potential and capabilities?
Just because a few opportunities are lost does not mean that there won’t be more avenues and challenges. Changing a small thing will go a long way in initiating a series of changes in our lives. It all needs us to take the first step in a different direction.
Can we help our friends and relatives to overcome depression?
People with a history of failures continue to strive for a better day. Whether there is a change in their life or not makes very little difference to them. They consider both success and failure almost equally. They rarely entertain people who praise them unnecessarily. They are not too bothered about expansion or conquering.
On the other hand, people who have been successful in the past seem to get depressed the moment they start losing. They have been winning their success so easily that they would have gotten used to it. A small failure becomes a life-and-death situation. They start cultivating people who support them unequivocally.
We can help others by playing an active role during times of crisis. Besides, we must learn to play it down when the results are not according to our expectations. Overwhelming rejoicing during success and total neglect during failure send a wrong message to our friends and relatives.
Do you think depression can be prevented?
Do you want to help someone out of their misery so that this can lead to a more contented life?
It may not be entirely their fault that they are stuck in such a predicament where they are unable to come out of it on their own! They may need some handholding, guidance, coaching, and enforcement to march ahead in their life. Second chances are difficult to come by but not taking them is to deny oneself an opportunity to succeed!
Are we well-equipped to identify, understand, and evaluate the situations we come across?
Depression is not a problem but a symptom of an underlying set of issues. The etiology of depression is reflected in how comfortable we are in dealing with our problems. Just like headache, which manifests due to problems in the Digestive, Musculoskeletal, and Neurological processes. The underlying problems of depression are fallacious thoughts, faulty decisions, and inadequate solutions.

Learn the skills necessary to prevent depression.

Your willingness to help can add a third dimension to your understanding.
Make sure you are learning something every day.
Keep your brain active, your mood joyful, and your life worthwhile.
Enforce what you learn and keep moving towards a positive goal.
