The Psychology of a Businessperson
What makes businesspersons different from others?
Whatever our vocation or profession is, we come across
people who are engaged in business. Why is it that everyone can’t do business
or why is it that many people fail in business? These questions can be answered
by knowing a little more about the psychological makeup of a typical
businessperson. What brings in success, depends upon the following
characteristics.
Risk-taking Behavior
The major
characteristic that stands out in businesspersons is the ability to take risks.
They don’t mind putting their hard-earned money to invest in their venture.
They carry the burden of losing their investment but still go ahead with their
business. They are always on the lookout for any kind of loan that is available
so that they can improve their business. They never consider that a loan is a
further burden on themselves.
Desire for Ownership
Somehow
working for someone doesn’t motivate businesspersons. They prefer to be
independent, even at the cost of not having a regular income. Even if they join
jobs, it is only temporary. Their aim is either to learn the tricks of the
trade or to tide away the difficult period. Given a small opportunity, they attempt
to invest and own.
Energetic
They work endlessly without
getting tired or bored. No task seems difficult for them and they are ready to
forego food, water, sleep, and other basic amenities. They are passionate about
their business and are always eager to learn something new. Irrespective of the
number of failures, these businesspersons are optimistic about whatever they do.
Treasure of Ideas
Businesspersons are always
willing to try out new ideas. Either by borrowing from others or trying out
their own, they are filled with ideas. It doesn’t matter whether an idea works
or not. They are more interested in trying out to see if it works for them. It
is not merely borrowing that happens. They are also equally interested in
sharing their ideas with others. They volunteer to put forth new ideas and take
satisfaction when those ideas click.
Excellent Communication
Businesspersons make it a point
to learn as many languages
as they can. Never does language become an obstacle for any
businessperson. They are convincing in
their communication
and always ensure to drive home the point. Most of them may not be good in
written communication but they are excellent in oral communication and body
language.
Negotiation Skills
They take
interest in negotiations and are willing to forego a lot in these transactions
as long as they think that it helps their business in the long run. They are
always on the lookout for conflict
resolution and they can help in minimizing the emotional impact of
a situation. For the businessperson, the customer becomes more important than
gaining profits and during negotiation, they focus more on building the
relationship.
Persistent
They usually don’t take no for
an answer. Despite ups and downs in their business, they persist with their
approach. They struggle very hard to maintain normalcy in the face of failures
and losses. Most businesspersons
keep repeating the process until they get results. This is a great reflection
of their perseverance.
Maintaining Relationships
Businesspersons strive to
maintain a strong relationships.
The same cannot be said about personal relationships, but when it comes to
business, they never forget even an acquaintance. They try to cultivate newer
connections and keep exchanging information. They are always on the lookout for
learning interaction skills and make use of them whenever necessary.
Party Animal
Businesspersons never miss an
opportunity to attend functions and parties. They love a congregation of
people, and whenever or wherever they find any occasion, they make their
presence felt. They also play the role of a host efficiently and don’t mind
having total strangers attend the parties.
Stressful Life
Their capacity for excitement
has no bounds. They love a stressful life and find ways to usher in stress in
their daily activities. Even when they take a vacation, they keep themselves
busy either by generating new ideas or meeting new people. Their notion of
relaxation is to engage in some kind of interaction related to their business.
Not Studious
Though they are always trying to
gather information, businesspersons rarely sit down to make a detailed study,
even if it is connected to their business. They would like to apply whatever
information they get and have no patience for prolonged study. They go through
a lot of information but very rarely sit down for any deeper understanding of
the material.
Decision-making Skills
Most businesspersons do not want
to spend too much time on speculations. They can analyze available information
very fast and make appropriate decisions. All their actions are geared toward
collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and choosing information that matters.
This ability enables them to do efficient problem-solving.
Managerial skills
In addition to the quality of
Entrepreneurship, businesspersons exhibit finesse for managing things, events,
and people. They are good at not only delegating tasks to others but also at
getting things done. Planning comes naturally to them, though they may not
stick to their plans. Most of them have good leadership skills, too.
Intuitive Nature
While engaging in business, several
situations arise where there is no time to think logically or analytically. Whenever
they have to take sudden decisions businesspersons depend more on their
intuition rather than on logical thinking. This could be about people, things,
or events. Most of the time they are successful.
Entrepreneurship
What stands out in the people
who venture into business is their enterprising nature. Their thinking is
usually innovative and adventurous. They develop a passion for their ideas and
try to implement them wherever possible. They don’t hesitate to put forth their
thoughts and actions and are willing to test different permutations and
combinations.
Conclusion
It is not that the business doesn’t
fail. They do most of the time. However, by understanding these qualities and
cultivating them, youngsters who want to venture into business can derive
benefits.
