Choosing Independent Goals
When
our goals are not achieved, we tend to blame others. This is because we would
have borrowed the goals from others and we don't know the difficulty in
achieving the goals. Should we not choose goals independently?
What we borrow Belongs to others, so Make it yours
Identify the goals for your needs and wants. Let the goals be as independent as possible so that neither you borrow the goals from someone else, nor depend on someone for their fulfillment.
A lot of people approach me saying that they feel bored or
exhausted in life. One reason for this could be that they have been borrowing
goals and after trying each one, they feel that it does not work. Rather than
borrowing goals, it is better to borrow ideas and transfer this into etching
our goals.
Setting
Lifetime Personal Goals
Setting lifetime personal goals has an advantage where we can
be meaningfully engaged throughout our lives.
Depending upon the need, each of the following groups of goals can be broken down into smaller or major goals, short-term or long-term goals, sub-goals, or important goals.
1. Artistic Goals
Try to pursue at least one artistic goal, almost all the time. If you are interested in singing, it doesn’t mean that you have to learn singing or practice singing! You can even keep listening to some good music once in a while. There are hundreds of artistic goals to choose from, and your interest and inclination should be the guide for you.
2. Wellness Goals
Physical fitness also becomes an important goal in life. Maintain some physical activity every day so that you can enjoy life to the full extent. When young, it is especially advisable to play a game or a sport regularly to maintain physical fitness. Give equal importance to mental and spiritual Wellness.
3. Learning Goals
Pursue some interest in learning something new. It could be something in your area of work or anything you are interested to know about. You don’t have to join a formal course. Now that so much information is available online, any type of learning will be fun. The more you keep yourself open to experience, the richer will be your quality of life.
4. Career Goals
Try to acquire some skills or knowledge about the profession or vocation you are involved in. Try to help the younger generation understand the complexities of the profession or job. Make sure there is some considerable advancement periodically in your career.
5. Contentment Goals
The only person who can come in the way of your pleasure is yourself. Make sure that your love life is continuous. Try to satisfy the aesthetic needs of all senses. Derive contentment from what you do and choose appropriate goals to ignite the passion in you. Enjoy life every day and share it with family and friends.
6. Family Goals
Build a better relationship with the family members and try to spend more quality time with them. As you advance in age, try to guide the younger generation rather than giving them advice. Allow them to take responsibility and don’t deny them the opportunity to face reality.
7. Economic Goals
Stabilize your financial strength and try to reduce your liability as much as possible. We shouldn’t pass on our financial difficulties to our children and at the same time, we should make them understand the true value of inheriting and protecting wealth.
8. Social Goals
Changing our attitudes, beliefs, opinions, ideas, prejudices, biases, stereotypes, superstitions, etc. becomes a necessity in the ever-changing dynamic modern world. How best are we coping with such complex sub-systems? Try to meet people who can help you in this regard, and keep looking out for opportunities to change.
9. Environmental Goals
Keeping our environment reusable is a principal duty of all citizens. Use bio-degradable materials and don’t fall prey to propaganda. Looking after our surroundings, planting saplings, caring for the climate, recycling waste, etc. are some of the tasks that can keep us going.
10. Service Goals
Try to help the community in some way or another. Whatever
your experience is, try to share it with as many people as possible. Who knows,
someone may become inspired by your achievements! Join some associations that
are doing public service, so that you become a contributing member.
Choose any one or more of the ten goals and make it yours.
You don’t need to be motivated, you will be inspired!
