Planning your Career
Planning a career is essential for a youngster to focus
on building the foundation for the future. Though pressures are there from
every side, how can one plan the future, is outlined here in ten steps.
What would you like to become?
This is a question asked by almost everyone who meets a
child. Children are expected to say what the questioner has in mind. Let us
say, someone thinks that becoming a doctor can solve all problems. He or she
expects every child to say that s/he is going to become a doctor. If they say
anything else, a lot of arguments are put forth to substantiate that their
choice is wrong.
A few years back, I was asked by a television channel
to discuss the winners of a children’s talent program. While the set was
getting ready, the host asked the children what would they like to become.
Their answers were shocking. One child said he wanted
to become a doctor, an engineer, and a singer. Each child identified at least
three careers. I asked the children why they are claiming to enter into three
professions when even getting into one is difficult.
The boy explained to me, saying that his mother wanted
him to be a doctor, his father an engineer, and he wanted to become a singer.
So, whenever someone asks him this ridiculous question, he tells all three
things, so that they don’t start preaching to him.
You can’t take too many roads
Foundation for the career has to be deeper, wider, and
stronger. Each road may lead somewhere! Why go there and then decide you didn’t
want to come here? Find out from someone who has been there, and try to learn
from someone’s experience. And then decide whether or not you want to spend
your life here.
Planning your Career is a serious business
Just because every other sheep is falling into the
ditch doesn’t mean that you should do the same, too. Chances are too great that
you will be drawn into a vortex stronger than a hurricane.
Take one step after the other, even in your planning. Look
at yourself before you leap and look where you’re leaping. Success comes with
the balancing act of combining imagination, creativity, self-awareness, and a
certain amount of resourcefulness.
Always expectations are High but opportunities are fewer.
The greater the expectation the greater will be the competition, and the lesser
the chances of achievement.
In addition, there are pressures to fulfill peer needs
and at the same time, you will be bombarded with parental needs and societal
needs. You may have to balance between personal, professional, and Social
goals.
The following 10 steps provide insight into the
secret of success. Keep track of your failure and try to learn from them. Prepare
a checklist and note down the developments wherever they occur.
