What Psychologists Don’t Talk About?
Can
you open a newspaper without reading a lot of disturbing news?
Social
media and mass media bring out sickening information; some are video-graphed.
Strangers, loved ones, and even children are being killed indiscriminately.
Should we still act as if everything is normal?
As
psychologists,
we are supposed to act as a doorway to society to prevent and overcome problems by telling people what is happening to their consciousness.
Their consciousness has become toxic due to consciousness pollution and this is
confounded by ‘“Conscious
Capture”’ (one of the terms coined by me, to indicate the
predominance of consciousness over our personality).
Towards a Clean Consciousness
There
is a greater neglect of psychological issues that have been misinterpreted by
the large masses, including mass media. Major issues in psychology have been
misunderstood. This is an attempt to throw light on these issues.
Restoring
mental health doesn’t mean that we just treat and counsel people only with
psychological issues. Our basic duty is to ensure the restoration of mental
health and hygiene so that one does not become mentally ill. The fact that
mental disorders are increasing considerably day by day is proof that
psychologists are not talking about some important aspects. I contend that instead
of focusing on a small percentage of people with mental disorders, we should
focus more on the largest percentage and make sure they don’t succumb to such
ailments. That should be our primary role. We have the wherewithal for that but
we are either unaware of it or reluctant to use it.
For
example, there is so much hype that is created about how AI (Artificial Intelligence)
can solve problems, but no psychologist has warned you that it is dangerous to
the survival of society when only a handful of people have total control over
how people think and act. Watch the most recent video to see how AI can get
into innocent homes and ruin their livelihood and future.
When
we don’t even know how to use natural intelligence (See ’Are we USING our INTELLIGENCE?’), what guarantee is there that only
nice people will use AI and that their priority is the welfare of society?
Even
without Artificial intelligence, people can be taken for a ride. The case, in
question, happened recently when the term ‘social distance’ was used and when
people were asked to work from home. You can manage, observe, monitor, or
enforce physical distance, but not social distance. No one questioned the misuse
of the term and the whole world even to this day uses the same term. A detailed
treatise can be found here: ‘How can you use social media and maintain Social Distance?’
Another
example is when ‘Password is Rejected and Nonsense is Accepted!’
History is replete with instances where millions of innocent people including women and children have been killed all over the world. Such genocides have happened due to the instigation of a handful of people with evil intentions. So, ‘Are we overselling Leadership?’ is a reminder psychologists should ask or talk about!
Masses, in general, are always gullible. Media is almost always used by a handful of people to strengthen public opinion.
However,
people have no idea about what rational thinking is. It is the psychologists
who teach thinking and they must have known the difference between rational and
emotional thinking. (See ‘Is Thinking Necessary to Survive?’ to know how emotional
thinking leads to reaction, stress, and anxiety). Psychologists are expected by
society to use critical thinking but they, too, become gullible to emotional
blackmail. They seem to prefer to remain socially acceptable rather than
exercise their capability and training to warn the people of inherent dangers.
Teaching
the subject, practicing, and doing research is one thing but applying the
knowledge becomes more crucial.
For
instance, we teach about learning theories and principles but rarely let people
know how they have been indoctrinated (brainwashed), manipulated, and misled. We
have lessons and practical exercises on prestige suggestion and despite knowing
about these effects, we still don’t warn the masses about how they are taken
for a ride. People have little capability to understand why a celebrity
gets millions of rupees for a few seconds of endorsing an advertisement.
We,
on the other hand, unfortunately, also become prey to these pressures and
glorify success.
This is because of two reasons: as psychologists, we either don’t know what we are teaching or don’t care.
When
a rich country with the largest economy in the world has poverty, drug
dependency, unemployment, homelessness, physical and mental illness, road rage,
loneliness, divorce, gun violence, crime, etc., there is something wrong with
the systems and their functioning. All other countries try to emulate the United
States of America and move towards modernization. They don’t realize that they
too will end up in the same predicament.
Watch
the video below to learn how psychologists don’t tell you about certain
problems. We may blame politicians, policymakers, businesspersons, and others
for this predicament but I feel psychologists also must inform people about
such things happening around us and take measures to circumvent them.
With
terrorists, cybercriminals, and confidence tricksters getting adept at
psychological warfare, indoctrination, emotional blackmail, gaslighting,
manipulation, doublecross, threatening, controlling, digital arrest, etc., I
feel that psychologists have a major role in educating the masses.
My
objective is not to belittle psychologists but to empower them. Rather than
playing second fiddle to every other professional, psychologists can take up a
greater leadership role by discussing life's reality. Being a
psychologist myself, I am not against psychologists. They are doing wonderful
work in their chosen specializations. However, I feel they can help others
solve many psychosocial problems if they start talking about certain
things.
As part of my “3C” initiative—the “Clean Consciousness Campaign,” let me take up this challenge and let everyone know what psychologists don’t talk about?
Let me know if I am wrong. I have started this series because there
are hundreds of things psychologists don’t talk about? I feel that it would
benefit everyone if they did so. I hope at least now, they will make a
beginning.
This is an attempt to bring to the fore what
has been hidden for a very long time.
